The Headgear exhibit will feature dramatic arrays of horns, antlers, and head mounts of a wide variety of species drawn from the collections of Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology, as well as 3-D diorama and video presentations illustrating the use of horns and antlers in combat. Visitors will be invited to explore some of the properties of horns and antlers by touching real specimens and comparing their own body height to the world’s largest antlers, those of the extinct Irish Elk, which span as much as 12 feet. In addition, through specimens and text, visitors will learn about the structure and function of horn-like structures in other animals from tiny beetles to massive dinosaurs. Drawing from the collections of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology and Harvard’s Semitic Museum, the exhibition will display artifacts fashioned from the horn and antler of hoofed animals around the world and introduce visitors to the cultural significance of horns, antlers, and animals that wear them, both real and imagined.

I2 Lecture Series

Abstract: Signal classes are usually invariant to groups of operators such as translations or scalings, and to larger Lie groups of deformations. Classification thus requires finding informative invariants. Invariants are also at the core of quantum physics through Gauge theories. We introduce non-linear invariant operators, similar to quantum scattering. These operators have small commutators with elastic deformations and provide new representations of stationary processes. Their computational architecture reminds deep neural networks, but learning is needed at a single layer, and implemented with O(N) operations. State of the art results are shown for image classification of deformed patterns and random textures.

MIT Falun Dafa Group Exercises

Falun Dafa (also called Falun Gong, or just Dafa) is a high-level cultivation practice guided by the characteristics of the universe--Truthfulness, Benevolence, and Forbearance.

"Cultivation" means continuously striving to better harmonize oneself with these universal principles. "Practice" refers to the exercises -- five sets of easy-to-learn gentle movements and meditation. Cultivating oneself is essential; practicing the exercises supplements the process.

Over time, the principles of Dafa unveil the deepest and most profound truths of the universe. Following the principles, practitioners of Falun Dafa are able to reach very high realms, enlightening to the true meanings of life, and finding the path of return to their origins and true selves.

While the exercises have deep inner meanings, they also help to reduce stress and can bring great improvements in health and fitness.

Shear Madness

Shear Madness, Boston's hilarious whodunit and the longest running play in American theatre history, is a mixture of improvisation and up to the minute spontaneous humor, Shear Madness lets the audience solve the crime. Successful sleuthing leads to a delightfully different show everytime it's performed. Opening January 1980, the seven-time recipient of Best Comedy of The Year by The Boston Globe, Shear Madness is set in a Boston hairstyling salon and the landlady Isabel Czerny who lives above the shop is murdered. Mix and Mingle (Joint Event)

This is a joint event with the Social Fun Meetup Group, the Happy Hour Meetup Group and the Boston Nightlife Meetup Group, and the Boston Volunteer Meetup Group. I'm probably not going to be able to make it, but members had so much fun at the last mix and mingle that I wanted to post the event again. So, we won't be meeting as a group at the event, but I still encourage you all to come. This is not a Singles Party. Meaning anyone can come, including couples. All are welcome to Party and Socialize. Kitty O'Sheas has 2 Bars upstairs, 4 huge comfy couches, AC, its own DJ area with light machine and dance floor, plus its own bathroom upstairs so this will be like a private party. Note: Music will medium levels in main room upstairs. Music will be tuned very low in the back room so members can have a separate area to chat! At about 9PM the dancing and music starts, There will be 3 Bartender upstairs: 2 at the upfront Bar and 1 in the back . Some appetizers will be provided (Wings/veggie platter, cheeses etc) The entry fee is $5 to cover the cost to rent the whole 2nd floor, 3 bartenders +the DJ. Please find Biagio at the party and please give Biagio the $5. (No one dollar bills please) If you don't know Biaggio, go to the Social Fun Meetup and his picture is listed as the organizer. Or ask when you're there. Some one will point you in the right direction. After you get inside there is a Security at the stairs please tell them you are with Social Fun to get in (Even if you are with a different group). There were some issues last time and if you say you are with any other group they will not let you in. Some things to keep in mind: 1. Everyone, but the Meetup Head Organizers, pays $5. 2. If you arrive after 9PM, you will have to pay another $5 as a cover charge for the Bar Entrance fee to get in so that $10 total. $5 to bar and $5 to cover the cost to rent the 2nd floor. 3. If you get in before 9PM you only have to pay $5 to Biagio to cost to rent. Make sure you get there early! 4. It will be packed. Get there early to ensure you get in. 5.
