Sproton Layer
Tickets: http://www.ticketweb.com/fb/3491424/ttthebears Price: $10.00 Additional Info: In March of 1969, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Miller brothers Roger (17), Benjamin (15) and Laurence (15) had a mind-altering improvisation session on guitar, bass and drums in their basement. They called it “Freak Trio Electric”, and none of them, or their views on music, were the same after this event. A few days later, after repeated amazed listening to the tape (“Sounds like Pink Floyd cut with Captain Beefheart!”, wrote Roger in his journal), they decided to form a band. Roger wrote many songs that Spring incorporating riffs and motifs from their improvisations. Later that year they added trumpeter Harold Kirchen (brother of Bill Kirchen of Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen fame) and changed their name to Sproton Layer. Benjamin and Laurence began composing around this time. Their music was most definitely psychedelic, with many songs based on the “Toke Mythology.” The band played 20 or so shows in 1969 and 1970 before folding in the fall of 1970 due to the conservative direction rock music was moving. In late summer 1970, they recorded an album’s worth of material with classmate Mark Brahce engineering, again in their parents’ basement. This album, “With Magnetic Fields Disrupted”, was released 23 years later on New Alliance, along with a 45 from 1969 sessions, to very little notice. In 2010, the German label World in Sound found out about the group, contacted Laurence, and agreed to re-release “With Magnetic Fields Disrupted” in higher fidelity. And, to the amazement of the brothers, they offered to include a 24-page booklet with photos, song-lists, drawings, journal entries, and a history of the group. The CD and LP was released Fall 2011. Another album, including many other songs and improvisations, will be released in 2014 by World in Sound titled PRESS YOUR HAND AND THE WHOLE ROOM FLUCTUATES. In the fall of 1970, through a bizarre series of twists (like getting sponsored by the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research), Roger wrote out the music for With Magnetic Fields Disrupted in score form, and a book of the same name was published in 1972 by Ann Arbor Publishers. Roger painstakingly listened to the songs over and over and wrote down every note in score form, to the best of his 18/19-year old ability. Sproton Layer Laurence Miller Benjamin Miller

La Luz
Tickets: http://www.ticketweb.com/fb/3599964/ttthebears Price: $8.00 Additional Info: Featuring Shana Cleveland (guitar), Marian Li Pino (drums), Abbey Blackwell (bass), and Alice Sandahl (keyboards); the group brings a relaxed beach-babe vibe to their take on the sweet, thick harmonies of 60’s girl-group, garage, and doo-wop bands. Born in the Summer of 2012, La Luz is driven by thumping, energetic bass lines, danceable surf beats, trembling organ, reverb-soaked guitar, and a wild love of rock ‘n’ roll. The band recorded their first EP Damp Face with the help of their friend Johnny Goss in a sweaty apartment across from the laundry room in a Bothell, WA trailer park. The initial run of 100 home-dubbed cassettes sold out after the bands’ first few shows and in February 2013, Burger Records re-popped the cassette. A full length record is now in the works and La Luz looks forward to inspiring damp-faced dance parties in clubs, basements, theaters, and backyard seances all over the world!

Ivy Pochoda reads from Visitation Street with Dennis Lehane

Harvard Book Store is pleased to welcome novelists IVY POCHADA and DENNIS LEHANE for a discussion of Pochada's new book, Visitation Street: A Novel.

Chosen by Lehane for his eponymous imprint, Pochoda’s Visitation Street is a riveting literary mystery set against the rough-hewn backdrop of the New York waterfront in Red Hook.

It’s summertime in Red Hook, Brooklyn, a blue-collar dockside neighborhood. June and Val, two fifteen-year-olds, take a raft out onto the bay at night to see what they can see.

And then they disappear. Only Val will survive, washed ashore; semi-conscious in the weeds.

This shocking event will echo through the lives of a diverse cast of Red Hook residents. Fadi, the Lebanese bodega owner, hopes that his shop will be the place to share neighborhood news and troll for information about June’s disappearance. Cree, just beginning to pull it together after his father’s murder, unwittingly makes himself the chief suspect, but an enigmatic and elusive guardian is determined to keep him safe.

Val contends with the shadow of her missing friend and a truth she buries deep inside. Her teacher Jonathan, a Julliard School dropout and barfly, wrestles with dashed dreams and a past riddled with tragic sins.

A Wilhelm Scream

A Wilhelm Scream

How does one gauge the success of a band pushing the envelope of a genre that receives little to no credit by the mainstream media? In the case of A Wilhelm Scream, the answer is “Who cares?” – As a band playing punk rock for over a decade, members Trevor Reilly, Nuno Pereira, Nick Angelini, Brian Robinson and Mike Supina haven’t focused on success, image or whatever bandwagon a group can jump on to get their music into the ears of listeners: It’s the ideal of music from an honest place, playing to the kids who want to hear more than a simple love song, or want an opinion rammed down their throats. Despite operating just below the radar A Wilhelm Scream have carved out a reputation as one of the best live bands around, bolstered by their staggeringly rich albums of ultra- technical melodic punk rock firestorms. Playing 250+ worldwide shows each year, the band posses a work ethic best described as ‘heroic’. A Wilhelm Scream is: Nuno Pereira – Vocals Trevor Reilly – Guitar, Vocals Brian Robinson – Bass, Vocals Mike Supina – Guitar Nick Angelini – Drums
