Dancer/choreographer/producer Daniel McCusker has been showcasing his dance and dance-like “discoveries” since the spring of 2008. Each year the showcases have become more daring and the audience capacity has burst at the seams to the point that it has become necessary to move to a larger venue and to expand his ThIStHaT ShoWs into a two weekend extravaganza.

To break the mold even further, his annual spring affair is now in the height of winter, with ThIStHaT ShoW no.4 and no.5 poised to pay a warm tribute to many of the kindred spirits who figure in McCusker’s lively artistic world. McCusker is keen on investigating the true nature of dance and performance. The work that interests him the most is formal, very structure-based, making deliberate choices regarding its structural components. This formality serves to mediate any narrative elements so that the full meaning of the work can be revealed.

McCusker’s quest to discover this true nature by way of structure doesn't always play out, but as many of his fans have come to realize, the exciting part is when it does indeed play out. And they happen to be there when it all comes together. The yearly showcase has become a huge success, critically and otherwise, and is a much anticipated not-to-be-missed annual celebration for all lovers (and soon-to-be lovers) of local dance.

Merroir-Terroir: Oysters + Wine with Island Creek Oysters

What do oysters and wines have in common? Complex flavors, the Old World and the New, cultural touchstones, aphrodisia, and a connection between taste and place. In wine, textures and flavors that come from specific growing regions is called terroir. For bivalve aficionados, merroir is the equivalent concept, one that our experts from Island Creek will explore thoroughly in this class. Sample five different species of oysters at the peak of their season, each paired meticulously with wines from around the world. Wine expert and Island Creek Oyster Bar general manager Tom Schlesinger-Guidelli will join shellfish experts from the Island Creek farm for an edible lesson in merroir and terroir.

Classic Album Sundays presents David Bowie "Hunky Dorie" @ Meadhall

Classic Album Sunday presents David Bowie "Hunky Dorie" @ Meadhall

“Hunky Dory” is the record that truly signified David Bowie’s command of the album format. He had had a hit with the single “Space Oddity” and his third LP “The Man Who Sold the World” featured many great moments, however, it is really “Hunky Dory” that cemented Bowie’s position as a major pop player.

It is one of Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy’s favourite Bowie albums (there are about ten of them ) and she has recently been hanging out with producer Ken Scott who has told her some great stories. Scott engineered “The Man Who Sold the World” and at the time thought Bowie was good but probably wasn’t going to go anywhere. When Bowie asked him to co-produce “Hunky Dory” and presented his new batch of songs, Scott was duly impressed and realised what a great songwriter Bowie had become. Colleen has more stories up her sleeve, too.

Join us to first listen to music that either inspired or was relevant to this LP such as T Rex, Roxy Music and Syd Barrett followed by the story behind the making of the album. Then the lights go down, the volume goes up and we play the album from beginning to end on vinyl on our audiophile hi-fi. Listening guidelines apply.

Brave the Caves: An Underground Cheese Lesson - July 2013

The chilly stone caves beneath our Cambridge store hold hundreds of pounds of cheese, from 80-pound wheels of Comté to delicate-rinded blues to small logs of Belgian goat’s milk cheese destined for our in-house aging program. Go spelunking with Liz, one of FK’s cave assistants, and Matthew, our resident cheese science buff, and explore the science and secrets of our caves. You’ll head underground with them to view and discuss the crucial role these temperature- and humidity-controlled rooms play in cheese aging, storage, and maintenance, and round out the lesson by tasting a few examples of what you’ve learned. Be prepared for cave-like conditions by wearing a sweater or light jacket and shoes that can get a bit wet.

Creating Successful Crowd Funding Campaigns: What You Need to Know

Creating Successful Crowd Funding Campaigns: What You Need to Know

When an entrepreneur hears the words 'Kickstarter' or 'IndieGoGo', they think ‘wow, this is a great way to raise funds with no angels or VCs, presell my game, and spread the word about my goals and ambitions.” But, could it be a whole lot more, or less?

Come hear from game developers who have raised money on Kickstarter or other crowd funding platforms, as well as representatives from the crowd funding platforms themselves and industry analysts.  Learn about what it takes to have a successful crowd funding program, the benefits, and the downsides of operating in such an open environment. Our panel, which includes Mike Vorhaus of Frank N. Magid Associates (moderator), John Vaskis of Indiegogo, Dan Silvers of the Boston Festival of Indie Games and Lantana Games, Joshua A.C. Newman of Mobile Frame Zero / glyphpress and others will discuss what an entrepreneur needs for a successful kickstarter, who should or should NOT try crowd funding, and what is the real cost in time and money of a crowd funding campaign.

Come early or stay late to enjoy light appetizers / drinks and to network with your peers. The event will be held on Thursday, May 30th from 6pm – 9pm at the Microsoft NERD Center (One Memorial Drive, Cambridge).

Event sponsored by Microsoft New England Research & Development Center; Adobe; Morse, Barnes-Brown & Pendleton; FableVision and Becker.

Man Or Astro-Man?

Man Or Astro-Man?

There is an undeniable connection between the South and occurrences of extra-terrestrial form. From other worldly jazz guru Sun Ra, to German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun, Alabamahas always had more than an ample share of connections to outer space. Such is the case with Man or Astro-Man?, who arrived in a small college town in Alabama some years ago. In order to integrate into human society, they would have to downplay their true identities and take on aliases, most conveniently in the form as students. While studying industrial design and film, the group began formulating a mode in which to learn more about their new earthly environment. Soon the group became immensely attracted to pop culture and decided that the cliché of a being a rock band would provide a perfect vehicle in which to traverse the globe and further their research. Full integration into Earth society would thus commence for what was soon to be known to the world as Man or Astro-Man? A discovery of records long stashed away at various dilapidated thrift stores inAlabama lead the entities of Man or Astro-Man? to the scratched-up sounds of Link Wray, The Ventures, Dick Dale, Duane Eddy, The Marketts, The Safaris, and other instrumental guitar oriented music of the late fifties and early sixties. Instrumental music provided a great escape from the sappy, pretentious lyrical drivel emanating from the (then newly christened) 'alternative' FM radio. At the same time, offbeat stage set ups and designs by Kraftwerk, The Spotniks, The Residents, Devo, Sun Ra, and The B-52s had a great impact on the rapidly developing troupe. Around this embryonic time, Man or Astro-Man played innumerable shows in the Southeast with a scene of bands that included Southern Culture on the Skids, The Woggles, Hillbilly Frankenstein, The Subsonics, and The Flat Duo Jets. Developing around the liberating resurgence of the no bullshit sounds of surf and garage music, MOAM soon caught the attention of Estrus Records owner Dave Crider. He was taken with the band's teenage caffeine-induced energy and punkish take on instrumental surf music. Crider ended up releasing their debut full-length simply entitled, 'Is it...Man or Astro-Man?' (1993). The Estrus Records aesthetic that revolved around the art and packaging concepts of designer Art Chantry fit perfectly with the Man or Astro-Man? modus operandi. 'Destroy All Astro-Men' (1994) and 'Project Infinity' (1995), and several EP's were released by Estrus. Faced with licensing issues inEurope, MOAM embarked on a search for a new record label. From their recent shows with The Jesus Lizard and the Mekons, the band was alerted to Touch and Go Records and their artist-friendly business practices. Upon visiting the fine earth people of Touch and Go, the band decided it would indeed be the best possible label on which to release all future albums. 'Experiment Zero' (1996) was Man or Astro-Man's debut for Touch and Go. Recorded in three days with engineer Steve Albini at the Zero Return studio in Alabama, it stands tall among the great modern instrumental guitar records. After its release, the band began to evolve at a greater velocity than ever before. They morphed by extending their use of samples, computer programming, homemade instruments, electronic gadgetry, tape splicing, and other bits of random archaic technology. Both the '1000X' EP (1997) and 'Made From Technetium' (1997) were darker steps into the futuristic soundtrack music realm. Over time, Man or Astro-Man? has done countless bits of film and soundtrack work including compositions for Nickelodeon and The Cartoon Network(SpaceGhostCoastto Coast and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron). Members of Man or Astro-Man? have started record labels - Warm Electronic Recordings; recording studios - Zero Return; bio-diesel fuel centers -vegenergy.com; and have written for numerous publications including Chunklet, CMJ, and The Melody Maker.

Courtyard Series: Berklee at the Regattabar - Albino Mbie
Featuring: Albino Mbie - Guitar & lead Vocal
Jiri Nedoma - Piano
Roberto Giaquinto - Drums
Chuks okpu - Acoustic and Electric Bass
Tracy Robertson - Vocals
Erin Bentlange - Vocals

Albino Mbie was born in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, a country in southern Africa known for its rich musical and cultural heritage. Fueled by the resourcefulness and determination that have always characterized Mozambicans, he built his first guitar at 16 from a five-liter can of oil, scrap wood, and strings made out of electrical cords.

Drawn to the sounds of neighborhood street musicians in Maputo, Mbie began to play in a number of local bands. As with his homemade guitar, he wanted to combine styles and incorporate diverse elements in his music. For his talents to grow, he knew he needed experience new places, cultures, and sounds.

While studying music education and performance at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique, he heard about Berklee, and soon after, became one of the first students to receive a full scholarship to Berklee through the African Scholars program in 2009.

At Berklee, he was exposed to a variety of influences, but wanted to go deeper into the roots of jazz and expand his knowledge of music. He auditioned and was selected to participate in the Berklee Global Jazz Institute (BGJI), which is directed by Danilo Pérez and has a roster of teachers that includes Joe Lovano, John Patitucci, and Terri Lyne Carrington. BGJI fosters a musician's artistic vision, and has helped Mbie find his own unique voice in the art form.

Albino still felt the absence of his own Mozambican traditions in his music. With the help of his mentors, Richard Bona and Lionel Loueke, two of the most prominent African musicians in the United States, he began to bridge that gap.

Today, Albino's music succeeds in combining many disparate parts into an organic whole. It incorporates his musical experiences from Mozambique, the U.S., and many other places around the world, combining rhythmic patterns and musical concepts to create a unique "Moz-jazz" sound.

Albino Mbie's original composition, "Mozambique Dance," was released by Jazz Revelation Records, a student-run record label at the Berklee, in 2011. He recorded another original, "Awusiwana,", for the Berklee 2012 Summer in the City disc. His debut album, also called Mozambique Dance, is to be released in Spring 2013.

Albino Mbie is an active musician, and has performed in several countries including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Italy, the U.S., and Mexico. He has also produced and recorded various projects in Mozambique and in the United States. He graduated from Berklee in 2012 with a dual degree in performance and music production and engineering, and a minor in acoustics.

Courtyard Series: Berklee at the Regattabar - Daniel Rotem
Featuring: Daniel Rotem - Tenor Saxophone and Flute
Jared Henderson - Bass
Roberto Giaquinto - Drums

Jazz saxophonist Daniel Rotem has performed with the Rainbow Big band led by Phil Wilson, with the Concert Jazz Band led by Greg Hopkins (with whom he performed in a concert featuring the great drummer Peter Erskine and at the JEN conference in Kentucky), and as a featured guest at a joint performance of India Arie and Israeli composer-singer Idan Raichel (as well as with the Idan Raichel Project in Israel).

Born in 1990, Rotem was accepted into the Thelma Yellin High School for Arts in Tel Aviv. As a member of Thelma Yellin's Big Band he performed at two international events: the IAJE Annual Conference in Toronto and the SAJE in Capetown. He graduated with honors from Thelma Yellin's Jazz Program in 2008. He was subsequently awarded an honors scholarship for the Shtricker Conservatory in Tel Aviv and a scholarship for Berklee's Five-Week Summer Performance Program in Boston.

In the summer of 2009 he participated in the Siena Jazz Workshops, held in Siena, Italy, playing and studying with Lionel Loueke, George Garzone, Scott Colley, John Taylor, and Michael Blake. Upon completing the workshops he was offered a full scholarship to return for the 2010 program, where he met some of his former teachers and performed with Kenny Werner, Peter Bernstein, Eric Harland, Joel Frahm, and Jeremy Pelt.

In 2009-2010 he studied at Israel's Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, where he was also awarded a scholarship and had the chance to develop his performance and improvisation skills, as well as his composing and arranging abilities. The youngest student to reach the finals, Rotem was awarded first place in Rimon's Outstanding Jazz Player Competition and as a result represented Rimon at the 20th IASJ meeting in The Hague. There he had the opportunity to play in an ensemble headed by Reggie Workman. In January 2010 he had the privilege to meet and perform with saxophonist David Liebman. A group tutored by Liebman performed Rotem's arrangement of one of Liebman's compositions. Rotem was awarded the America-Israel Foundation scholarship for 2010-2012.

Rotem relocated to Boston in May 2011 and began full-time studies on a full-tuition scholarship at Berklee College of Music, towards a bachelor's degree in jazz performance. At Berklee, Rotem has studied and played with Bill Pierce, Hal Crook, George Garzone, Dave Santoro, Jim Odgren, Ed Tomassi, Tiger Okoshi, Shannon Le Claire, and Terri Lyne Carrington. He was also chosen as a finalist in the live auditions for the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance master's program. In 2012 Rotem and his quartet recorded one of his original compositions, "Hill Workout," for Berklee's Jazz Revelation Records label release Ripple Effect. The recording was also included on a promotional CD sold throughout the many Berklee summer events and performances. Considering music a force connecting people and cultures, Rotem decided to serve as a peer advisor, helping new students, and as a student ambassador, representing Berklee all over the world.
