Sampling MIT will directly connect visitors to some of the thousands of research topics currently being explored at the Institute. In typical MIT fashion, the questions being asked are large, and the techniques used to discover answers are broad - from bio-engineering a virus to build a battery, to developing delightful-to-use consumer devices, to creating a system that allows people all over the planet to work together on climate change. In each case, the research shown here represents MIT's commitment to working creatively, effectively and wisely for the betterment of humankind.

Abstract: Signal classes are usually invariant to groups of operators such as translations or scalings, and to larger Lie groups of deformations. Classification thus requires finding informative invariants. Invariants are also at the core of quantum physics through Gauge theories. We introduce non-linear invariant operators, similar to quantum scattering. These operators have small commutators with elastic deformations and provide new representations of stationary processes. Their computational architecture reminds deep neural networks, but learning is needed at a single layer, and implemented with O(N) operations. State of the art results are shown for image classification of deformed patterns and random textures.

Falun Dafa (also called Falun Gong, or just Dafa) is a high-level cultivation practice guided by the characteristics of the universe--Truthfulness, Benevolence, and Forbearance.
"Cultivation" means continuously striving to better harmonize oneself with these universal principles. "Practice" refers to the exercises -- five sets of easy-to-learn gentle movements and meditation. Cultivating oneself is essential; practicing the exercises supplements the process.
Over time, the principles of Dafa unveil the deepest and most profound truths of the universe. Following the principles, practitioners of Falun Dafa are able to reach very high realms, enlightening to the true meanings of life, and finding the path of return to their origins and true selves.
While the exercises have deep inner meanings, they also help to reduce stress and can bring great improvements in health and fitness.

This is a joint event with the Social Fun Meetup Group, the Happy Hour Meetup Group and the Boston Nightlife Meetup Group, and the Boston Volunteer Meetup Group. Note: Music will medium levels in main room upstairs. Music will be tuned very low in the back room so members can have a separate area to chat! At about 9PM the dancing and music starts, There will be 3 Bartender upstairs: 2 at the upfront Bar and 1 in the back . Some appetizers will be provided (Wings/veggie platter, cheeses etc) The entry fee is $5 to cover the cost to rent the whole 2nd floor, 3 bartenders +the DJ. Please find Biagio at the party and please give Biagio the $5. (No one dollar bills please) If you don't know Biaggio, go to the Social Fun Meetup and his picture is listed as the organizer. Or ask when you're there. Some one will point you in the right direction. After you get inside there is a Security at the stairs please tell them you are with Social Fun to get in (Even if you are with a different group). There were some issues last time and if you say you are with any other group they will not let you in. Some things to keep in mind: 1. Everyone, but the Meetup Head Organizers, pays $5. 2. If you arrive after 9PM, you will have to pay another $5 as a cover charge for the Bar Entrance fee to get in so that $10 total. $5 to bar and $5 to cover the cost to rent the 2nd floor. 3. If you get in before 9PM you only have to pay $5 to Biagio to cost to rent. Make sure you get there early! 4. It will be packed. Get there early to ensure you get in. 5. Only the finest musicians have the ability to capture the nuances of life in sound, which puts Johnny in a very exclusive group of six-stringers that includes Les Paul, Wes Montgomery, Jeff Beck, Chet Atkins, and Jimi Hendrix. The secret is his blend of melody, sonic definition, technique and that indefinable-yet-tangible quality called soul. And hes eloquently shared that secret on the CDs Sometime Tuesday Morning (2001), Get Inside (2004) and the instructional DVD Taste, Tone, Space (2006). All the virtues of Johnny A.s playing are in abundant display on One November Night. Johnny has shared the stage with B.B. King, Les Paul, Jeff Beck, JJ Cale, Etta James, Dr. John, Joe Satriani, Peter Frampton, Steve Vai, George Thorogood, Eric Johnson, Joe Bonamassa, Huey Lewis and the News, Sonny Landreth, Robben Ford, Monte Montgomery, Duke Robillard and Coco Montoya, among others. Performances at Eric Claptons Crossroads Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Japans Fuji Rock Festival and many more. Played as a sideman with such artists as Bobby Whitlock and J. Geils frontman Peter Wolf. In his six year stint as Wolfs guitarist, Johnny recorded on the album Fools Parade (1999) and co-produced Long Line (1996) with Wolf. Nominated for Best Debut Album at the Boston Music Awards in 2000 for Sometime Tuesday Morning. Radio single from that album, Oh Yeah, was 1 on AAA radio at stations in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Austin, TX, among others, the first time in a decade an instrumental artist achieved that status. Gibson Custom Guitars introduced the Johnny A. Signature Model in 2003, designed from the ground up per Johnnys specs. This was the first time in 40 years Gibson had done so for an artist and it has become one of the companys most successful and popular models. Johnny A.s Signature Model is featured on Gibson.com as one of the top Five Iconic Guitars and sweetest rides in the Gibson Shop, along with Signature B.B. King and Les Paul models.

Shear Madness, Boston's hilarious whodunit and the longest running play in American theatre history, is a mixture of improvisation and up to the minute spontaneous humor, Shear Madness lets the audience solve the crime. Successful sleuthing leads to a delightfully different show everytime it's performed.
Opening January 1980, the seven-time recipient of Best Comedy of The Year by The Boston Globe, Shear Madness is set in a Boston hairstyling salon and the landlady Isabel Czerny who lives above the shop is murdered. Every one of the characters has a reason to do her in.
Performance schedule is Tuesday through Friday at 8PM, Saturday at 6:00PM and 9:00PM and Sunday at 3PM and 7:00PM at The Charles Playhouse, 74 Warrenton Street, in the heart of Boston's theatre district. Single tickets are $42. For tickets and information call the Shear Madness box office at 617-426-5225. Great discounts for groups of 15 or more. Visit www.shearmadness.com for more information.
